Laughter. And music. Still, I am all too aware there is an empty chair, there are no presents under the tree that say Love, from Don (or Pop). But he's here, I see him in eyes that suddenly have a far away look, hear him in remembered music. We'll sing Christmas songs, play board games, eat too much chocolate... We'll miss his Christmas culinary surprises - and my grandson's will be the deep voice reading T'was the Night Before Christmas this year. But we will be joyful. We all know he wouldn't have it any other way. It's Christmas.J. I prefer writing in my own study - I have a short attention span and could get distracted in a monk's cell, but I hate to think of the time wasted, sitting in a cafe without a book to read or write, just staring into space...

It sounds as though you have the writing in cafes down to a fine art. I see that sometimes in Internet cafes and Starbucks: the person sitting there beavering away on their laptop without a drink or muffin anywhere in sight, ignoring the glares from the staff. Even to an observer, it seems really rude.

I love writing in public. It gets me away from the distractions of the Internet and my reference library. It gives me an ever-changing view if I need to look up from my laptop for a moment and refocus (I do take my laptop everywhere and I've never had it stolen or spilled a drink on it). I've had great writing sessions in kids' play centers, coffee shops, the waiting lounge at the local cinema (where they know me so well they know the names of my books and how I take my coffee), on the high speed train to London and on airplanes. Other than having to fend off the overly curious (usually when I'm writing something risque - Sod's Law), I've never had a problem. I usually take headphones and put the earbuds in, but don't play music. The earbuds dampen the ambient noise, and also deter any but the most determined from interrupting me.E J Frosthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07678832155422194291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8867529070283476350.post-64067759808311428052017-01-16T07:08:38.197+00:002017-01-16T07:08:38.197+00:00Ha! If you love cute rambling bookshops, then visit Scarthin Books if you're ever in the Peak District. Cromford itself is well worth a visit, with its own visitor attractions and very close to the Transport Museum, Matlock and Matlock Bath. The bookshop stocks both secondhand and new books in a labyrinth of rooms, as well as funky stationery - and it also has its own café and cat :) Actually, why am I bothering to waffle about it?
