November Update

Details of what I've been up to this month ...

Guest Blog Posts

As well as working hard to finish my latest book, I've written guest blog posts for other authors. Are there any you've missed?

for Terry Tyler

Does my star sign influence my writing process?

for Elaina James

I love visiting Conwy because of all the fabulous history. In this Halloween special, for Elaina James, I talk about the various ghost stories associated with the town. Some may have been faked to attract the tourists. But others ...

In which I blog about not blogging (again)

I can see I'm going to be one of those people who blogs three times in one week or not for months on end. Sorry!

Me with Valerie-Anne Baglietto
at Novelistas' launch for Sunlounger 2

How did it get to be July already? And, more importantly, what on earth have I been doing? Well, if you follow the Novelistas blog, you'll see I've been to three book launches: Every Woman for Herself (Trisha Ashley), A Girl Can Dream (Anne Bennett) and my own (OK, shared with Valerie-Anne Baglietto and 40+ other writers!) launch for Sunlounger 2.

I'm still working on my next novel, Trust Me I Lie and a novella called Something Wicked. I've also made a start on a new series of short stories/novellas called What You're Proposing. The first story, The Indecent Proposal, can currently be downloaded for free.

New Series!
What You're Proposing is a series of five short stories about a rock band, so I've also written a post for the Sunlounger blog, about why rock stars make the best romantic heroes.

And finally, Breathless did really well following the Easter promotion. It got to #1 in Movers and Shakers, and #1 in Women Sleuths, and only missed out on the Amazon Top 100 by 20 places. Huge thanks to you all for buying it!

The Appeal of an Imperfect Hero

A tongue-in-cheek look at the heroes of my ‘Proposal’  short story series…

It’s hard to create the perfect romantic hero. He has to have faults and flaws, like any real person, but also have a wide appeal. Now I’ve created heroes who have been detectives, actors, journalists and even a landscape gardener once, but the character I get the most mail about is Taz, the Australian rock star from A Girl’s Best Friend. So why do rock stars make such great heroes?

Well, first there’s all the obvious stuff:

They have talent. Never underestimate the allure of having a song written about you or, better still, sung specifically to you—even if it is on the back of a tour bus somewhere on the M25.

They are hot. Yep, he’s sexy and he knows it.

They know all about having a good time. And we’ve all had that urge to trash a hotel room.

They’re unobtainable. OK, that’s a slight fib. Given the right circumstances, or even the wrong ones, rock stars are not remotely unobtainable.

Everyone else wants them. This, of course, makes us want them even more.

Heroes are supposed to be likeable, preferably lovable and definitely lust-after-able. But despite their apparent good fortune, your average rock star will have a whole host of problems magnified by fame and wealth, many of them self-inflicted, and all of them widely (and gleefully) reported in the media.

In my short story The Indecent Proposal Ryan has been caught cuddling up to a pretty singer at an award ceremony. The photos have been published all over the Internet, so how is he going to get his girlfriend back? In The Accidental Proposal Luca has abandoned his band while on tour—but he’s got a very good reason. Ryan and Luca are both suffering setbacks, not entirely of their own making, but which wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t been famous.

Musicians work hard but if they’re successful they can have the most amazing, glamorous existence. The Indecent Proposal is set in Sorrento, while The Accidental Proposal takes place in New Orleans. We first meet Ryan at a party, whereas in one of Luca’s early scenes he’s scrabbling about in the gutter. It’s certainly a life of extremes!

Sometimes it’s all too easy to see rock stars exist purely for our entertainment and forget they have their hopes and fears just like the rest of us—albeit on a much larger-than-life scale. They might not be perfect, and I wouldn’t want to date one in real life, but they certainly make fascinating romantic heroes.

Perfectly imperfect, in fact!

Freebie!

You can currently download The Indecent Proposal free of charge from Amazon UK or Amazon USA, as well as other ebook retailers such as Kobo and iTunes, although I can't guarantee it will be free on all sites, as it is up to each company to decide how  much they will charge.

If you have signed up with Amazon for Kindle Unlimited, you can download most of my books as part of your subscription.

Here Comes Summer

I always seem to end up writing summer stories in the most appalling weather. My story for the original Sunlounger anthology was written in a snowstorm, with me bundled up in at least 3 sweaters. I wrote the one for Sunlounger 2 in a terrific electrical storm, with thunder crashing overhead and the power going off and on every few minutes. Perfect inspiration for horror, but romantic comedy? Not so much!

Each time Belinda Jones asked me to contribute to her brilliant Sunlounger anthologies I thought, "Great, I'll write a steamy romance set on a beach" but it never quite worked out that way. The Indecent Proposal was set in Sorrento (Italy) which, although gorgeous, doesn't have much of a beach. Instead it has huge old hotels set right into the cliffs and elevators down to jetties where the guests can sunbathe or swim. My second story, The Accidental Proposal, isn't set on a beach either but in New Orleans, a city which has always fascinated me. I did so much research for that story - but all my characters wanted to do was go on a bar crawl.

That's the last time I take them on a free holiday!

Sorrento, Italy

Some Like it Hot

Autumn hit my little bit of Wales with a vengeance this weekend, with gales and heavy rain. Cue me needing to write a short story about a summer holiday!

Last year I contributed to the anthology Sunlounger. My story was a romantic comedy called An Indecent Proposal. It involved a naked rock star and was set in the Italian city of Sorrento. I originally wrote it during a snowstorm!

Sunlounger was a huge success and reached #13 in the Amazon top 100.

So we’re doing it all again!

Which is why I’m spending today shivering in my cardie and Uggs - and planning a summer holiday for some lucky, as yet unnamed heroine.

I do wish I was going wherever she’s going!
